Trump says Talarico can’t be elected because ‘he’s a vegan’
During a Wednesday press gaggle, President donald Trump attacked Texas Democratic state Rep. James talarico, accusing him-falsely, according to the report-of being vegan and saying that “you can’t get elected as a vegan in Texas.”
The remarks followed Trump’s endorsement of texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for the GOP U.S. Senate seat.Paxton is set to face Republican Sen. John Cornyn in a May 26 primary runoff, and Talarico secured the democratic nomination in March after defeating Rep. Jasmine Crockett.
Trump’s criticism is also tied to prior controversy over food comments: he mocked Talarico for ordering a “meatless” taco that included egg (so it wasn’t vegan) and said Talarico had previously claimed he is not vegan. Trump further suggested Paxton will beat Talarico, criticizing him for positions Trump described as extreme (including references to “six genders” and attacks on Jesus) and for wearing a mask. A 2022 video cited in the article shows Talarico wearing a mask while promoting a “non-meat campaign,” which Trump used to bolster his argument.
