Taco Bell ditches lettuce, offers $1 deals after cyclospora outbreak
Taco Bell has introduced $1 lettuce-free Enchiritos and app-exclusive Nacho Fries to regain customer trust following a cyclospora outbreak linked to its shredded iceberg lettuce. After removing the infected lettuce nationwide, the company assured customers of its commitment to safety and encouraged them to enjoy their meals. The CDC initially attributed the outbreak to lettuce from Taylor Farms in Mexico, but later found this to be a false positive. Despite conflicting reports, the FDA maintains that epidemiological evidence strongly links the outbreak to Taylor Farms, and ongoing tests are being conducted to ensure product safety. Additionally, Taco BellS efforts include a social media campaign and special deals to attract customers back to the brand.

“For the ones who have been with us, $1 Enchiritos just dropped, more to come,” Taco Bell said in a post on Instagram.

The multinational fast-food chain was recently linked to the source of more than 1,644 infections in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pointing the finger at its shredded iceberg lettuce.
Earlier this month, Taco Bell announced the immediate removal of the infected lettuce from all restaurants nationwide and assured customers of its commitment to safety.
“As of July 17, Taco Bell has completed removal of affected Taylor Farms lettuce from our restaurants. Based on ongoing conversations with public health officials, and out of an abundance of caution.”
The fast-food chain also took to Instagram, encouraging customers to “go ahead and enjoy your Taco Bell today” after removing the lettuce, and followed up with an announcement of the $1 special.
News surrounding the cyclospora outbreak has been mired in confusion. Last week, the Food and Drug Administration initially said the outbreak was linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms in Mexico. But after a review, officials concluded the result was a false positive.

The agency removed the sample from its update on Saturday and said there are no confirmed positive product samples for cyclospora. Despite the revised test result, the FDA said it continues to work with Taylor Farms and state officials to ensure products linked to the outbreak have been removed from the market while additional samples are collected and analyzed.
The FDA said Monday that the epidemiological evidence linking the outbreak to Taylor Farms remains “overwhelming.”
