Mamdani says he will add Little Italy to NYC neighborhood map

New york City Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the previous administration of Eric Adams over the omission of Italian,Irish, and Jewish communities from a city immigrant neighborhood map, despite its promotion as a cultural passport by NYC Tourism + Conventions. The map, created by the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, highlights neighborhoods like Little Palestine, Little Pakistan, and Little Haiti but excludes others such as Little Italy and Jewish or Irish neighborhoods. Mamdani acknowledged that the map was based on an earlier version from 2023 and promised future updates, including adding Little Italy. The Italian American Civil Rights League responded strongly, asserting that Little Italy would not be erased and announcing plans to hold a rally ther. Mamdani clarified that his administration inherited the map and intended to make it more extensive. The controversy underscores ongoing tensions over cultural representation and acknowledgment of diverse immigrant communities in New York City.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called out the administration of former Mayor Eric Adams for the uproar over a city immigrant-neighborhood map that left out Italian, Irish, and Jewish communities.

The city’s tourism and marketing organization, New York City Tourism + Conventions, promoted the graphic on its website, titled “New York City: A Cultural Map.”

“Check out NYC neighborhoods home to thriving international communities and cultures,” the image caption said.

The map is sourced by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.

Notably, the map includes Little Palestine, Little Pakistan, and Little Haiti, but some of the more widely known communities, such as Little Italy, were left off, and it did not mention any Jewish or Irish neighborhoods.

The Italian American Civil Rights League posted on X, sharing a news conference of the mayor, who said the map was made during the previous administration.

“This map was initially created by the prior administration in 2023, and when we inherited it, we added a few additional neighborhoods,” Mamdani said on Friday. “It’s clearly not an exhaustive list of the more than 200 ethnic communities that call our city home, and we’re going to be making additional changes in the future to reflect that, and that includes adding Little Italy to the map.”

The civil rights group also posted before the mayor made the announcement, saying, “We were here before Zohran. We will be here long after Zohran. Little Italy will NOT be erased.”

It had also said it would hold a rally in the heart of Little Italy.

The Washington Examiner contacted Mamdani’s office for comment and asked when the new map would be released.
