Mamdani ‘sending a signal’ after erasing Italian Americans on map: Joe Concha

Joe Concha, a Washington Examiner columnist, criticized New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani for deliberately excluding Italian American communities from a city immigrant neighborhood map. Concha argued that neighborhoods like Little Italy, along with Irish adn Jewish areas, were intentionally omitted to send a specific message about inclusion. The map, promoted by NYC’s Tourism + Conventions, highlights diverse international communities but notably lacks some long-established neighborhoods, prompting outrage from the Italian American Civil Rights League. They vowed to hold a rally in Little Italy and emphasized their longstanding presence and importance. Concha highlighted this as a sign of the mayor’s divisive approach, contrasting it with his inclusive rhetoric towards muslim and other communities. The controversy underscores ongoing tensions over cultural recognition and representation in NYC.

Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha ripped New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani for omitting Italian American communities on a city immigrant neighborhood map.

“Little Italy, notable Irish and Jewish immigrant neighborhoods, all erased by Zohran Mamdani. This was not a mistake, this was intentional,” Concha said on Fox News’s Hannity Thursday.

The New York City Tourism + Conventions promoted the graphic on its website, titled “New York City: A Cultural Map.”

“Check out NYC neighborhoods home to thriving international communities and cultures,” the image caption said.

The map is sourced by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.

Notably, the map includes Little Palestine, Little Pakistan, and Little Haiti, but some of the more widely known communities, such as Little Italy, were left off, and it did not mention any Jewish or Irish neighborhoods.

“The old saying is, ‘To respect one is to respect all,’ and the mayor is clearly sending a signal here, under his regime … those who are welcome and those who are not, and in his case, he welcomes Muslims, he welcomes others,” Concha said.

The Italian American Civil Rights League posted on X responding to the map.

“We were here before Zohran. We will be here long after Zohran. Little Italy will NOT be erased,” the group said on Friday.

The league also said it will be holding a rally in the heart of Little Italy.

“We all are a melting pot, I have no problem with a big melting pot, but to obscure, or at least erase, people that have been there for many, many decades, let alone centuries, including the Italians, the Irish, and so on, is a whole bowl of wrong,” Concha said.
