Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz Claims Victory Over Wokeness in the Military

Thanks to the efforts of Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, a “child-friendly” drag show scheduled for June 1 at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada has been canceled. Gaetz’s actions prompted Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to order the cancellation of the event, which was planned to coincide with the opening of “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Pride Month.”

While Gaetz’s actions are commendable, it is concerning that U.S. military officials would even consider promoting such an event in the first place. Gaetz’s letter to Austin and Milley identified five other instances in which military officials have promoted drag queen events at taxpayer expense. This is unacceptable, and Gaetz rightly questions whether it is appropriate for children to attend sexualized drag performances.

The Importance of Protecting Children

Protecting children from adult sexual expression is crucial, and it is not a matter of hatred towards the LGBT community. The question at hand is why U.S. military officials promote any drag shows, let alone “kid-friendly” drag shows, at public expense. Conservatives have long regarded the U.S. military as an oasis of sanity in a desert of social declension, but the military’s recent actions are concerning.

While individuals in the military may exemplify the values for which they are asked to fight, militaries as institutions have a history of submitting to aggressive social revolutions. Wokeness, which the U.S. military has shamefully abetted, bears all the marks of the fanatical movements that brought the world to ruin in the 20th century. It is time for the military to prioritize its duty to protect the nation over promoting divisive and inappropriate events.
