Chelsea Clinton Faces Backlash for Tweet Opposing Bans on LGBTQ-Themed Books

Former presidential daughter Chelsea Clinton sparked controversy with a tweet opposing bans on LGBTQ-themed books. She shared an NBC News article that criticized the recent push to remove sexually explicit books from elementary and middle school libraries. Of the top 13 “most-challenged” books according to the American Library Association, seven had LGBTQ themes. Clinton tweeted, “Over 50% of the attempted book bans last year involved books with LGBTQ+ characters & themes. Bans such as these are nothing but harmful.”

Critics Respond

However, critics pointed out that many of the books were not being banned but simply removed from school libraries based on age appropriateness. Some of the books mentioned in the article contained graphic depictions and illustrations of sex acts, including those between minors.
