Barr deems Trump’s view on Presidential Records Act ‘ridiculous’.

Former Attorney General William Barr Calls Out Trump’s Absurd Claims

Former Attorney General William Barr is speaking out against former President Donald Trump’s assertion that he has the right to maintain documents under the Presidential Records Act. In an interview on CBS News’s Face the Nation, Barr disputed Trump’s claims and called them “absurd.”

“The legal theory by which he gets to take battle plans and sensitive national security information as his ‘personal papers’ is absurd,” said Barr.

Barr explained that the purpose of the Presidential Records Act is to prevent presidents from removing documents from the White House. The act was passed after Watergate and restricts what a president can take. It specifically states that the documents must be purely private and unrelated to government policy deliberations.

“Obviously, these documents are not purely private. It’s obvious. And they’re not even now arguing that it’s purely private. What they’re saying is the president has sweeping discretion to say they are, even though they don’t squarely fall within the definition. It’s an absurd argument,” Barr continued.

When asked if he believed Trump lied to the Justice Department about the documents, Barr stated that he did believe Trump lied. He also emphasized that while Trump has faced unfair scrutiny in the past, this indictment is not one of those cases.

The former president is facing multiple charges, including willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and concealing documents in a federal investigation. He recently pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Miami, Florida.
