Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, the former president’s son and politician of Mexico’s left-wing Morena party, wrote in a letter to President Donald Trump, and subsequently posted to his Instagram page, that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau revoked his U.S. visa, appealing the decision directly to Trump.

López Beltrán called Rubio and Landau’s decision to revoke his visa “politically motivated” and “propagandistic,” calling their move “arrogant,” according to a Google translation of his letter from Spanish to English. López Beltrán argued that State Department officials had “no evidence against me regarding any immoral or criminal act,” saying he has “always guided my public and private life with the ideals, principles, and honesty instilled in me by my parents and practiced out of conviction in my political work.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who is also a member of the Morena party, chimed in on the debate during a Friday news conference, calling the act to revoke López Beltrán’s visa “essentially political in nature.”
“They are not applied consistently across all countries, as they would be if the intent were truly related to crime,” Sheinbaum said of U.S. visa revocations, according to The New York Times. “This is clearly an act of interference in Mexican politics. I see no other reason.”
The State Department has not yet publicly commented on López Beltrán’s visa status, but announced on Monday that the agency, under the second Trump administration, has revoked the visas of over 175,000 people “who violated the terms of their visas, committed crimes, called for violence against U.S. citizens, defrauded Americans, abused our immigration system, or endangered national security.”

“Under President Trump and Secretary Rubio’s leadership, the State Department will continue to identify, investigate, and revoke the visas of foreign nationals who threaten the safety of the American people,” the State Department wrote in the Monday press release. “A U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right. The Department remains committed to using every tool available to protect our communities from those who abuse it.”
The Trump administration has largely had an up-and-down relationship with Sheinbaum and the Morena party. In April, the Department of Justice indicted 10 current and former Mexican officials, including a Morena party official, on charges related to drug trafficking and weapons offenses.
