Byron York of the Washington Examiner criticizes Biden’s college campus visits as a ‘poor choice.

Byron York has questioned why President Joe Biden should speak on college campuses amid the myriad of protests, calling it a “terrible idea.”

Biden is scheduled to speak at Morehouse College, a prominent historically black college in Georgia, on May 19 and the U.S. Military Academy on May 25. Some have expressed concern over possible protests disrupting the president’s appearance at these schools, though state Rep. Roger Bruce, who graduated from Morehouse College in 1975, has said he does not expect such activities to materialize at scale.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) had suggested that the president ought to speak on campus to address the protests, which have gone viral over how many have sprung up in support of Palestinians. York, the chief political correspondent for the Washington Examiner, stated that Khanna is one of Biden’s most vocal advocates but that he was giving the president bad advice to suggest having him speak on college campuses.

“First of all, the president wouldn’t say anything on it until last week, then came out and actually gave a pretty good statement, in my opinion, about the things that were going on in campus were not peaceful protests. But imagine, let’s say he makes an appointment at a university to deliver a talk on free speech. I mean, security would be absolutely huge. There would be huge protests outside. It would be the national focus of this protest movement, which right now is divided among a bunch of campuses. Seems like a really bad idea,” York said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom.

The timing of these numerous protests happening across college campuses has resulted in several schools canceling their graduation ceremonies, with Columbia University being the latest school to make this decision on Monday. Previously, the school opted to do only remote classes for the remainder of the semester.

York also addressed how former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee ahead of the 2024 election, has been using social media to campaign for president while fighting legal battles in the courtroom. On Monday, the Republican National Committee, Trump’s campaign, and the Republican Jewish Coalition released a video comparing how the former president and Biden have responded to rising antisemitism in the United States.

Trump’s use of social media, York explained, has been “pretty useful” for the former president, describing him as the spokesman for the Republican Party.
