UK Anti-Trust Regulator Defends Decision to Block Microsoft’s Acquisition of Activision Blizzard

The head of Britain’s anti-trust regulator, Sarah Cardell, has defended the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) decision to block Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The CMA had stated that the deal would hit competition in the nascent cloud gaming market. Microsoft has said it will appeal the ruling, while its president, Brad Smith, has accused the regulator of undermining confidence in Britain as a destination for tech businesses. However, Cardell has stated that the CMA is not seeking to create a “hostile environment” for tech companies and that it had engaged widely with companies across the sector.
