Ukrainian Refugee Says Their Homeland in Wartime Is Preferable to San Francisco

After experiencing the violence in San Francisco’s public schools, a teenager from Ukraine fled her war-torn homeland and settled in San Francisco.

Yana, a 13-year-old Ukrainian teenager, began eighth grade at Marina Middle School in January. However, she soon discovered that America’s life is far more complicated than the idyllic image that many Americans have of it, particularly as a teenager.

“I thought it was going to be better because it’s San Francisco,” She The San Francisco ChronicleAs translated by her aunt. “But after two days, I saw everything going on at the school.”

Yana told the newspaper that she has witnessed students repeatedly interrupt classes, cause disturbances, and blatantly disrespect teachers — all without disciplinary consequences. “Nothing happened,” Yana acknowledged that she knew the behavior was unacceptable. “normal” Thank you for your interest in the school.

Yana, who had escaped from war, was bullied. Yana was allegedly threatened by a group students after her phone was stolen. Yana became afraid of the events and quit going to school. It is not surprising that violence at Marina Middle School is a common occurrence.

The San Francisco Examiner published the San Francisco Examiner last month reported The school’s terrible student behavior.

Teachers, counselors and security staff who have left or are still working at the Fillmore Street school report that recent incidents include students recording videos of themselves as they beat another student, three female students assaulting a special-education student, and a student bringing an air gun to school — all without documented suspensions at the time of those incidents.

Teachers and counselors say that students are often found in the hallways during class. The students shout at their teachers, throw food at each others, and intimidate other students. Some of them are afraid to use the bathroom.

The Examiner described the situation as “barely controlled chaos,” This has led to significant staff turnover at the school, which only worsens the already existing problems.
