Kyiv battered by largest ballistic missile attack of war
Kyiv experienced its largest ballistic missile attack of the war, with over 50 missiles launched, primarily targeting logistics and industrial sites. The attack included 38 Iskander ballistic missiles and six Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles,which where difficult to intercept,resulting in less than half of the missiles being shot down-a significant decline from previous levels. The primary targets were warehouses and factories, including a Ukrainian defense company, UKRTAC, whose main plant and warehouses were destroyed in the strike. This escalation comes amid Russia’s increased missile attacks, exploiting Ukraine’s declining interceptor stockpiles, which have been low since last year due to Western stock diversion to the Middle east. Despite extensive recent strikes, Ukrainian defense experts indicate that more and larger-scale attacks are needed to significantly diminish Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Simultaneously occurring, both sides continue their drone and missile campaigns, with Ukraine impacting Russia’s energy infrastructure for the first time as the conflict began.

Among the most successful hits was against UKRTAC, a Ukrainian defense company responsible for producing body armor, helmets, tactical gear, and other protective equipment.
Severion Dangadze, UKRTAC’s founder and development director, said direct hits destroyed its main plant and warehouses.
“Tonight our enterprise experienced the greatest tragedy in its entire history. As a result of a direct missile hit, the UKRTAC plant and our warehouses were completely destroyed,” he lamented, while stressing that no employees were killed.
The focus on logistical targets came hours after Ukraine hit a large warehouse belonging to the Russian online retailer Wildberries, killing several and sending a massive plume of smoke above Moscow.
Russia has escalated its missile attacks against Kyiv in recent weeks, taking advantage of the depletion of Ukraine’s interceptor stockpiles. The interceptor ammunition has been running dangerously low since last year, and the situation was made worse by the diversion of Western stocks to the Middle East to counter Iranian ballistic missiles, especially as the prospect of the war resuming its prior intensity returns.

Despite the extensive damage wrought against Ukrainian defense targets in recent weeks, the Russian military analysis Telegram channel Rybar cautioned that many more strikes were needed if a sizable dent were to be made in the country’s defense industry.
“The Soviet-era enterprises that now form the backbone of the Ukrainian defense industry are built in such a way that it’s simply impossible to disable them with just a few strikes,” it wrote, adding that strikes would need to be carried out “more frequently, more accurately, and on a larger scale” if Russia aimed to destroy the country’s defense backbone completely.
Russia has escalated its drone and missile campaign against Ukraine as Kyiv has done vice versa, inflicting significant damage against Russia’s energy industry for the first time since the war began over the past year.
