California and New York Attorneys General Launch Investigation into NFL Workplace Culture

The attorneys general of California and New York have announced a joint investigation into allegations of employment discrimination and a hostile work environment at the National Football League (NFL). The two attorneys general have issued subpoenas to relevant figures in the investigation, which will evaluate the culture of the workplace in the league.

Standing Up Against Discrimination

“California will not tolerate any form of discrimination,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta. “We have serious concerns about the NFL’s role in creating an extremely hostile and detrimental work environment. No company is too big or popular to avoid being held responsible for their actions.”

“No person should ever have to endure harassment, discrimination, or objectification in the workplace,” added New York Attorney General Letitia James. “No matter how powerful or influential, no institution is above the law, and we will ensure the NFL is held accountable.”

Reports of Discrimination and Retaliation

The attorneys general cited a 2022 New York Times report of 30 former employees alleging discrimination and retaliation after reporting to the league HR department, along with other reports as the impetus for opening the inquiry. They also referenced the House Oversight Committee investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and fostering a toxic work environment in the workplace of the Washington Commanders.

Accountability for All

The committee conducted several interviews for its investigation, which slammed the Commanders and its owner, Dan Snyder, for giving evasive answers and misleading information during his testimony in July 2022. There are four NFL teams headquartered in California and New York: the Los Angeles Rams, the Los Angeles Chargers, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Buffalo Bills, along with the league headquarters located in Manhattan. The New York Giants and New York Jets are headquartered in New Jersey despite having New York in their name.

Takeaway

The NFL is a powerful institution, but it is not above the law. The attorneys general of California and New York are taking a stand against discrimination and harassment in the workplace, and they will ensure that the NFL is held accountable for its actions. No person should ever have to endure a hostile work environment, and it is time for the NFL to take responsibility for its culture and make meaningful changes.
