Trump urges Alabama to back Barry Moore as polls show tight GOP Senate primary
President Donald Trump reaffirmed his backing of Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL) in the Alabama Senate runoff, where Moore is set to face former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson on Tuesday. The seat is open because Sen.Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is running for Alabama governor.
Trump praised Moore as an “America First” supporter and claimed Moore will be a strong winner for the Senate. Moore,a freshman congressman allied with the conservative Freedom Caucus and a longtime Trump loyalist, previously won 39.2% of the vote in the May 19 GOP primary. Hudson placed second with 25.6%,and his strong showing has made the runoff more competitive than expected.
Polling has been split: one pro-Hudson poll showed Hudson trailing by about one point, while a Club for Growth-backed poll gave Moore a 17-point advantage. The two candidates also diverge on Senate procedure-Moore supports eliminating the filibuster to pass Trump’s SAVE Act, while Hudson favors reforming it into a “talking filibuster” to keep Republicans able to advance the legislation.
Hudson’s support comes largely from more centrist Republicans and younger voters, and he emphasizes his Christian faith in the campaign. Moore responded to Trump’s endorsement by urging Alabamians to “finish this,” asking for their vote and promising to put Trump first.
