‘This smells bad, it looks bad’: Joe Concha on Newsom probe
Joe Concha, a columnist for the Washington Examiner, describes the Department of Justice examination into California Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, as very serious and potentially damaging to Newsom’s presidential ambitions. The investigation gained public attention after Newsom posted a video claiming that President trump directed the DOJ to investigate him and his wife without basis, motivated by his presidential run considerations. Concha highlights concerns that the investigation might be politically motivated, with some Democrats worried it could harm Newsom’s image before he announces a campaign.Reports suggest that Newsom may have diverted millions of dollars in donations to nonprofits linked to his wife and that she may be paying herself large sums from her charity. Concha criticizes the investigation as problematic and lacking integrity, implying it reflects poorly on Newsom and could hinder his political prospects.
Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha said a Department of Justice investigation into Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is “very serious” and could cost him a presidential run.
The investigation into Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, came to public attention Monday when Newsom posted a video on X, saying that President Donald Trump was investigating him on baseless accusations and also teased the possible presidential run as the root of the investigation.

Concha’s reaction stemmed from an article by the Hill about Newsom pushing off the investigation, as Democrats worry it would interfere with his campaign.

Concha cited an article from the Daily Mail that said Newsom “steered millions of dollars of donations to nonprofits connected to his wife.“
“You hear about these investigations where $340 million in donations from wealthy donors, special interests, some of which received preferential treatment, and millions of dollars in state contracts, all in propping up the political activities of Jennifer Newsom,” Concha said on Fox Business’s The Evening Edit.
Concha said another Daily Mail investigation alleged that Jennifer Newsom was paying herself millions to run a charity.
