Residents in a South Carolina county called the sheriff’s office to deal with the “annoying” sound of cicadas on Tuesday.
The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office shared on Facebook that it has been contacted by several residents about the noise of cicadas, which are emerging this month across the United States.
“We have had several calls about a noise in the air that sounds like a siren, or a whine, or a roar,” the post from the sheriff’s office reads. “The sound is cicadas.”
Two different broods are emerging this year in what at least one scientist, John Cooley of the University of Connecticut, calls “cicada-geddon,” according to the Associated Press.

“Cicadas are a super family of insects that appear each spring,” the sheriff’s office posted. “The nymphs have lived underground for 13-17 years and now this time they are hatching. Although to some, the noise is annoying, they pose no danger to humans or pets. Unfortunately it is the sounds of nature.”
A group of cicadas can be as loud as a jet engine, and scientists who study the critters wear earmuffs to withstand the sound, according to AP.
