Texas Authorities Arrest Several People in Connection with Shooting Rampage

On Friday, a shooting rampage in Cleveland, Texas left five people dead, including an 8-year-old boy. The suspect, Francisco Oropesa, was on the run for four days before being apprehended on Tuesday. Now, Texas authorities have arrested several people who may have helped Oropesa evade capture.

Details of the Shooting

The shooting began when neighbors asked Oropesa to stop firing his semiautomatic rifle in his yard because it was keeping their baby awake. Instead of complying, Oropesa reloaded and entered the home of his neighbors, killing five people.

Additional Arrests Made

San Jacinto County Chief Deputy Tim Kean announced on Wednesday that several additional arrests have been made in connection with the crime, but did not provide details on their involvement.

“Anybody that helped this maniac definitely has some issues as far as I am concerned,” Kean said.

Suspect Apprehended

Oropesa was found hiding in a closet under some laundry in a home in nearby Montgomery County. He is a Mexican national who has been deported from the United States four times since 2009.

Reward for Information

Officials acted on a tip from an unidentified person who was eligible for an $80,000 reward offered for information leading to the arrest, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said on Tuesday.

Victims Were from Honduras

Most of the victims were shot in the head. All were from Honduras and among the 10 people living at the address, but they were not all family members, Capers said.

A $5 million bond will be set for Oropesa when he appears in court on Wednesday. The town of Cut and Shoot, where he was arrested, is roughly 17 miles west of Cleveland and about 50 miles north of Houston.

This tragedy has shocked the community and our hearts go out to the victims and their families.
