Senate overturns DC police reform bill, sends to Biden.

The Senate Votes to Block D.C. Police Reform Law

The Senate recently passed a disapproval resolution to block the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022, a police reform law passed by the Democratic D.C. council last year. The law aims to increase police accountability and transparency, but Republicans argue that it places unnecessary restrictions on police during a time when the city is struggling with crime problems.

Who Voted for the Resolution?

The resolution passed with a 56-43 vote, with eight Democrats joining 48 Republicans in voting for it. The House passed the resolution on April 19, with 14 Democrats joining all 215 Republicans in voting for it.

What Does the White House Say?

The White House has stated that President Joe Biden would veto the resolution if it came to his desk. While the President does not support every provision of the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022, he believes that Congress should respect the District of Columbia’s right to pass measures that improve public safety and public trust.

The D.C. law bans the use of chokeholds by the Metropolitan Police Department and other local law enforcement personnel. It also approves the use of police body camera footage and requires the mayor to release such footage with the names of the officers involved in cases of officer-involved death or serious use of force, with a few exceptions.

What’s Next?

The resolution now heads to President Biden’s desk, where it is expected to be vetoed. The fight for police reform continues, with both sides arguing for what they believe is best for the safety and well-being of the citizens of D.C.
