Fetterman called ‘lazy trust fund baby’ after blowing off Senate responsibilities

Fetterman reportedly declined to meet with three wheelchair-bound veterans who had traveled to his office, telling staffers that he was sick after the veterans arrived. He later told staffers that he had actually skipped the meeting to appear on Fox News to discuss the war in Iran, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The report has prompted criticism from members of Fetterman’s own party.
“John Fetterman is a disgrace. Our state deserves better than a lazy trust fund baby who is too lazy to do the job,” Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) wrote on X.
Last month, Boyle teased a run for Fetterman’s seat in the 2028 election, calling the senator unpredictable and criticizing his friendliness toward President Donald Trump.
Fetterman’s office did not respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.
The report, which draws on interviews with former Fetterman staffers and internal text messages, portrays a senator who has expressed little interest in the day-to-day responsibilities of serving in the Senate.
Fetterman was the only member of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation who refused to meet with a group of constituents who traveled to Washington in April 2025 to discuss federal grant cuts affecting Eastwick, a poorer, flood-prone neighborhood in Philadelphia, according to the report.
Internal text messages cited by the report also show Fetterman expressing frustration about meeting with children at a hospital.
“I’m convinced they just want free trips to DC,” Fetterman reportedly texted an aide while questioning why he had to meet with the children.
The revelations come as Fetterman has found himself at odds with parts of the Democratic Party and has developed closer relationships with Republicans. He has particularly clashed with Democrats over Israel and the party’s approach to socialism.
“I don’t know if the Democratic Party is ‘big tent’ enough for proud, pro-Israel supporters,” Fetterman said last week, arguing that the party had increasingly embraced what he called a “warped mutation” of socialism.
Fetterman has also criticized Democrats for backing progressive candidates in competitive Senate races, warning that the strategy could cost the party winnable seats.
Fetterman has repeatedly denied speculation that he could leave the Democratic Party to become a Republican or independent.
“Never,” Fetterman said when asked about switching parties. “I’m not being cute. I vote 90-something percent with Democrats.”

Fetterman has, however, suggested that the Democratic Party’s position on Israel could become a breaking point for him.
“If our party ever becomes, and just makes it official, the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave because that’s been a moral clarity for me,” Fetterman said.
