“Seinfeld” Star Jason Alexander Threatens to Quit Twitter Over Having to Pay $8 a Month for Verification Check
Popular actor Jason Alexander, known for his role in Seinfeld, recently told his followers that he may leave Twitter if he has to pay the new verification fee to maintain his blue check. The blue check appears next to an account name on Twitter and indicates that the account belongs to a verified user.
Alexander insisted that the blue check was necessary to distinguish himself from fake accounts impersonating him. He added that he would not want to remain on Twitter without the verification, as fans would not be able to identify him on the platform.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, recently made an announcement stating that blue verification check marks would be removed if the account was not registered in the monthly Twitter Blue plan.
Alexander, who has a net worth of $50 million, would easily be able to pay the $7 – $8 monthly fee to maintain his verification status. Additionally, Twitter deletes clone and fake accounts to further ensure that verified accounts belong to the correct users.
The verification fee has been under discussion by Twitter for quite some time, with Musk notifying users about it last year. With the new verification fee, users are also given additional abilities like posting longer videos and tweets. Verified accounts are also expected to get a boost in engagement as their posts will rank higher.
Alexander is not the only celebrity complaining about the verification fee. Other celebrities like Stephen King, William Shatner, and Monica Lewinsky have also voiced their opposition to it.
Nevertheless, Twitter continues to enforce the verification fee correction, with new tweaks to ensure imposter accounts cannot abuse the verified status.
