Republican holdouts refuse to budge before 3rd Speaker vote: ‘No progress possible’
Republican Holdouts Make Their Position Clear Ahead of 3rd Speaker Vote: ‘No Way Forward’
As the third vote on Rep. Jim Jordan’s bid to become Speaker of the House approached on Friday morning, the Ohio Republican declared that he would not back down, despite his opponents’ claims that he would not succeed.
On Thursday, after initially stating that he would withdraw his candidacy following two unsuccessful votes, Jordan changed his mind and announced that he would go for a third attempt on Friday. Some of the Republicans opposing him predicted another defeat.
Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, one of the 22 GOP representatives who voted against Jordan on Wednesday, revealed that during a GOP meeting on Thursday evening, it became clear to Jordan that most of the dissenting Republicans were not willing to change their stance. Kelly remarked, “You know how smart this guy is, right? And he doesn’t wear glasses. He can see the writing on the wall.” Despite the situation, Kelly praised Jordan for handling it with grace.
Rep. John Rutherford of Florida also confirmed that Jordan received a clear signal on Thursday night that the votes against him were unlikely to change. Rutherford stated, “Our mind is set. He needed to know there is no way forward for the speakership.”

The congressman cited the example of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who won the closed-door vote of the House Republican Conference over Jordan but withdrew when it became evident that a solid GOP faction would not support him.
Jordan “missed his moment of leadership when he failed Steve Scalise, and that was pretty much everybody’s opinion,” Rutherford said.
Another Republican holdout, Rep. Mike Lawler of New York, expressed the need to bring back former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, whose removal sparked two weeks of intense House GOP infighting. Lawler stated, “The best thing that could happen now — for our conference, the House of Representatives, and the country — is for cooler heads to prevail, past grievances to be dropped, and for Republicans to concede that ousting Kevin was a mistake and set things right.”
According to Roll Call, Thursday night’s meeting included expressions of anger from Republicans such as Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa and Drew Ferguson of Georgia, who revealed that they had received death threats for opposing Jordan. Ferguson posted on X, “That is simply unacceptable, unforgivable, and will never be tolerated.”

Jordan addressed the media on Friday morning, emphasizing the importance of electing a speaker and getting to work for the American people. He highlighted the need to support Israel, move forward with the appropriations process, and prioritize oversight work. Jordan stated, “In short, we need to get to work for the American people.”
“Our plan this weekend is to get a speaker elected to the House of Representatives as soon as possible, so we can help the American people,” Jordan told reporters.
The third vote on his speakership bid was scheduled for 10 a.m. ET on Friday.
