Media Bury Illegal Alien’s Alleged Attempt To Run Over ICE Agent

The article discusses the conflicting portrayals of the incident involving Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican man fatally shot by ICE agents during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston. According to DHS, Araujo allegedly attempted to evade arrest, rammed an ICE vehicle, refused commands, and tried to run over an officer with his vehicle, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense. Tho, mainstream news outlets such as CNN, ABC, Houston Public Media, Click2Houston, and The New York Times frequently enough emphasized Araujo’s family background and avoided highlighting the key allegation that he used his vehicle as a weapon prior to being shot.Their reports tended to downplay or omit DHS’s account of Araujo’s purported aggressive actions, leading to a portrayal that focused more on his personal story and presumed innocence rather than the disputed circumstances of the shooting. The coverage reflects a tendency to sidestep the central incident details, potentially influencing public perception of the event.

An illegal alien from Mexico was fatally shot Tuesday after he allegedly tried to run over an ICE agent with his vehicle during an enforcement operation, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

But you wouldn’t necessarily glean that if you read some of the headlines from members of the propaganda press.

The incident unfolded Tuesday morning when ICE agents “attempted to conduct a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien. The driver of the vehicle, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo — an illegal alien from Mexico — attempted to evade arrest,” according to DHS. DHS said it received information that Araujo “rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense.”

If that account is accurate, then the shooting occurred only after Araujo’ allegedly attempted ‘s alleged attempt to use his vehicle to kill or seriously injure a federal officer.

CNN’s Dalia Faheid and Chris Boyette nevertheless headlined their piece: “For 35 years, a Mexican father built homes in Houston. Then a morning drive ended in tragedy.”

Instead of leading with the details DHS says led to the shooting, Faheid and Boyette begin their story emphasizing Araujo’s family and profession. The third paragraph then states: “An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in an unmarked car fatally shot the Mexican man inside his van, Salgado Araujo’s oldest son recounted Wednesday.”

Notably, the son was not present during the incident, making his account secondhand. CNN did not tell readers that Araujo allegedly tried to run the officer over, instead simply saying that Araujo “attempted to evade arrest as agents tried to conduct a traffic stop as part of a ‘targeted operation.’ He rammed into a law enforcement vehicle and refused to follow several verbal commands before an ICE agent fired his weapon in self-defense, the agency told CNN in a statement Tuesday.”

ABC News posted an article written by Armando Garcia on X: “Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers shot and killed a Mexican national during an incident in Houston on Tuesday, the agency said.”

The article itself is even more skewed than the post on X, however, as its headline begins with a quote from Araujo’s son that “he did not deserve to die.” Garcia avoided the central allegation that precipitated the shooting — that is, Araujo allegedly trying to run the officer over — in the article’s opening paragraphs. By the third paragraph readers are only told that “Araujo is allegedly undocumented and didn’t follow verbal commands, according to ICE. This is the second ICE-involved shooting in less than a week.”

Only in the fifth paragraph does ABC News inform readers that DHS says Araujo allegedly attempted to run over an ICE officer with his vehicle. But a reader who never made it that far could easily conclude that the fatal shooting stemmed from an illegal alien simply ignoring “verbal commands.”

Houston Public Media’s Kyle McClenagan and Bianca Seward chose a headline that was similarly misleading: “ICE agent fatally shoots man in Houston during ‘targeted enforcement operation.’” Click2Houston‘s “award-winning” journalist Brittany Taylor omitted the allegation almost entirely. In a story headlined “‘A hardworking Mexican man’: Son of man killed by ICE in Houston demands investigation,” Taylor fails to include any of DHS’s allegations about what led to the fatal shooting.

The New York Times’ Edgar Sandoval similarly misled readers in his headline: “ICE Officer Kills a Mexican Man in Houston.” He noted in his subhead that Araujo allegedly tried to run over the officer, but indicated there is no evidence to support such a claim.

The allegation that Araujo used his car as a deadly weapon prior to being fatally shot is central to the entire story — yet the propaganda press sidestepped or obfuscated it.
