PHOTOS: Record fireworks show lights up DC for America’s 250th birthday

The United States celebrated the 250th anniversary of its independence with an unprecedented fireworks display in Washington, D.C., marking the largest in the city’s and possibly world history. The event featured over 850,000 pyrotechnic effects launched from ten locations across the National Mall and West Potomac Park during a 40-minute show, substantially exceeding the usual 17-minute celebrations with around 17,000 to 20,000 fireworks.President Donald Trump watched the spectacular display, wich was organized by the Freedom 250 task force. The previous record for fireworks was held by a church in the Philippines with 810,904 fireworks in 2016, though the new record has yet to be officially recognized by the Guinness World Records. The celebrations also included numerous photos, news coverage, and events like the Salute to America, with many spectators viewing fireworks over iconic landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial and jefferson Memorial. Some events where affected by weather, and others by heat waves, which led to cancellations of some festivities. The record-breaking display aimed to celebrate both U.S. history and its place in the world’s record books.

The nation’s capital was lit up by a record number of fireworks to commemorate the United States’s 250th birthday after several weather-related delays.

President Donald Trump watched over the fireworks, which his Freedom 250 task force said would feature over 850,000 pyrotechnic effects launched from 10 locations from the National Mall to West Potomac Park across 40 minutes. In comparison, the standard fireworks celebration in the capital is 17 minutes long and features around 17,000 to 20,000 fireworks being set off.

The display was aimed at being not only the largest fireworks show in Washington, D.C., history but also world history.

The previous record was held by the Iglesia Ni Cristo, a church in the Philippines, which set off 810,904 fireworks in 2016.

The Guinness Book of World Records has yet to officiate the new record, as the process often takes several days.
