Phoenix to send 600 unclaimed firearms to Ukraine.

The City of Phoenix to Send Unclaimed Firearms to Ukraine

The city of Phoenix, Arizona, has an exciting plan in motion. They are preparing to send approximately 600 unclaimed firearms to Ukraine. This decision was made during a recent Phoenix city council meeting, where it was agreed that the firearms would be given to the National Police of Ukraine.

The firearms in question include a variety of guns and shotguns, such as 9mm, 45mm, 39mm, and 12 gauge. These weapons have been in the possession of the city for 30 days, as per their policy regarding unclaimed items. Now, they are ready to be transferred to Ukraine through the trusted logistics company, Gruelle, based in Pennsylvania. The contract between Phoenix and Gruelle spans over two years.

A Historic Decision

The city council acknowledges that it is common practice to send unclaimed weapons to law enforcement agencies. However, this particular instance marks a historic moment as it is the first time these firearms will be sent to a foreign law enforcement agency.

According to Phoenix spokesman Dan Wilson, this process of transferring unclaimed weapons to other law enforcement agencies is routine for the city. The only difference this time is that the recipient is not a domestic law enforcement agency but one located outside the country.

Wilson stated, “We believe, based on the understanding of the people in the positions currently, that it has never happened before. But we are not 100% sure. The research it would take to confirm that would be lengthy. But based on the people who have been with the department a long time, we believe this is the first time.”

Gruelle, the logistics company involved in the transfer, primarily provides weapons to Ukraine for military purposes. However, Phoenix has made it clear that these firearms will be exclusively given to the Ukrainian police. It is worth noting that the city of Miami has previously donated firearms to Ukraine as well.

While this decision has garnered support, some GOP lawmakers have expressed objections. They believe that the firearms should be sold rather than donated.

Overall, the city of Phoenix is making a bold move by sending these unclaimed firearms to Ukraine. It is a decision that will not only benefit the National Police of Ukraine but also strengthen international law enforcement ties.
