Pamela Price, the Oakland district attorney who has been criticized by a local group for being too lenient on crime, will face a recall vote that will determine whether she stays in office.

This comes after the local Save Alameda For Everyone group received the requisite 73,195 signatures to trigger a recall election to name a new Oakland district attorney. SAFE doesn’t have a choice for a replacement for Price.

“Today marks a historic moment for our community,” said Brenda Grisham, one of two principal officers with SAFE.

“The resounding support for this recall petition sends a clear message that the people of Alameda County demand accountability and ethical leadership from their elected officials,” she added.

Crime was up about 26% for 2023, and totals have been increasing every year since 2020, according to the Alameda Police Department. Price took office in January 2023.

But the main source of ire toward Price originates from her criminal justice approach. The district attorney recommended a “non-carceral” approach for dealing with a 23-month-old’s death from a stray bullet in a gang shootout.

The SAFE website outlines the group’s numerous grievances against Price, saying she has “violated victims’ rights, ignored victim pleas and disrespected people who have been victimized by some of the worst crimes imaginable.”

The website later states that “residents of Alameda County now live with a palpable fear of being robbed at gunpoint, carjacked, shot, or assaulted. DA Price has sent a message loud and clear: the only people facing the consequences of crime are the victims.”

Price has attacked the campaign against her as “financed by billionaires who have no interest in public safety,” saying it pushes “hatred and racism.”

The Alameda County Registrar of Voters will certify its results in a board meeting on April 30.
