Months of Criticism

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D.) has announced plans to bus hundreds of migrants to suburbs outside of his city, despite months of criticizing Republican governors for sending migrants to New York. The move has angered local leaders, with Rockland and Orange Counties declaring a state of emergency to prevent the migrants from being housed in their communities.

Changing Tones

Adams’ announcement comes after he criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R.) for busing migrants to New York and other “sanctuary cities” for migrants. Other Democratic leaders who once touted their “sanctuary” policies have also changed their tune, with California Governor Gavin Newsom (D.) stating in December that his state was “about to break” due to an influx of migrants. Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a public health emergency after Texas sent migrants to her city.

Republican Pushback

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R.) has also made headlines for sending migrants to Democrat-run “sanctuary” cities, including Martha’s Vineyard. DeSantis is gearing up to ship migrants from his state again as his administration hires companies to handle the logistics. However, Republican leaders in Rockland and Orange Counties are pushing back against Adams’ plan, with County Executive Steve Neuhaus declaring a state of emergency to prevent the burden from being shifted to his community.
