Dean Phillips challenges MSNBC panel over party plan to ‘coronate’ Biden: ‘No voters know me
Presidential hopeful Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) stands his ground against MSNBC panel
During a fiery exchange on an MSNBC panel, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) refused to back down as former chief spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris, Symone Sanders Townsend, attempted to grill him about his loss in the South Carolina Democratic primary.
Sanders, who previously worked on Senator Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) 2016 presidential campaign, wasted no time in pointing out Phillips’ third-place finish behind President Joe Biden and fellow Democratic challenger Marianne Williamson. She questioned how Phillips could possibly hope to win a general election when he couldn’t even secure victory in the Democratic primary.

Grateful for the invitation from @SymoneDSanders and MSNBC to discuss why Democrats must use invitation – not condemnation – and promote a new generation of common sense leaders like @GovWhitmer and @RepJeffries.

Phillips, however, didn’t back down. He highlighted the fact that he had virtually no name recognition on a national level, attributing it to the Democratic Party’s focus on coronating Joe Biden rather than fostering healthy debate and competition.
“I think I probably have 5% name recognition now in the country. No voters know me,” Phillips asserted. “In fact, this is my first invitation to your network in four months. So I’m grateful to all of you — sincerely, I mean that.”
“That’s my whole point,” he continued. “The GOP has had a competition. They’re on TV, they’re consuming hundreds of hours of primetime television, debates, town halls. CNN has given every GOP candidate a one-hour town hall. At least there’s energy on the GOP side. We don’t get energy unless there’s competition. So when you coronate someone — especially a man like Joe Biden …”
Phillips went on to explain that while he respected Biden, his goal was to encourage more competition within the Democratic Party. He believed that this would ultimately lead to the emergence of the best and strongest candidates.
Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele chimed in, questioning Phillips’ approach. “So the Chairman in me says, ‘What the hell you doing?'”
Steele argued that the Democratic Party had the opportunity to choose a different candidate in 2020, but they ultimately chose Biden. He further contended that Biden’s refusal to step down, which Phillips deemed a “big mistake,” meant that the primary was his to lose.

Moreover, Phillips used the opportunity to call for unity among Democrats, urging his party to focus on finding common ground and supporting a new generation of leaders. He argued against the divisive tactics often employed within the party, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and inclusivity to achieve progressive goals.
Despite the pushback, Phillips remained composed and level-headed throughout the exchange. He calmly addressed Sanders’ questions and criticisms while staying true to his principles. His measured and strategic responses demonstrated his ability to navigate challenging situations and remain steadfast in the face of opposition.
Phillips’ refusal to back down in the MSNBC panel signifies his resilience and determination as a presidential hopeful. Ultimately, it is individuals like Phillips who have the potential to redefine American politics and pave the way for a more inclusive and collaborative future.
