‘No energy’ Cuomo does not have a case to stay in NYC race: Joe Concha
Washington Examiner’s Joe Concha is the latest to ridicule New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo’s independent run for office on Wednesday, saying the former governor has no reason to continue running.
Cuomo announced Monday that he would continue running in the 2025 New York City election, a few weeks after he lost the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani.
Concha, however, asked, “What is Cuomo’s case?” Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is the GOP nominee, while Mayor Eric Adams is seeking reelection as an independent.
“The only one who doesn’t have a case is Andrew Cuomo, and to your point, there’s no energy there. He thought he could just waltz in and get the nomination based on name brand, and now he has to work for it, doesn’t want to work for it!” Concha said on Fox Business’s Kudlow.
Concha also shared an op-ed he read earlier, saying Republicans are hoping “in a weird way” that Mamdani wins the general election, as this allows the entire Democratic Party to be portrayed “as a Mamdani.” If this happens, he joked a potential 2028 presidential run by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) would see the lawmaker lose “51 states.”
Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Mamdani after the Democratic mayoral debate. Mamdani met with Ocasio-Cortez and other Democratic lawmakers for a breakfast meeting on Wednesday morning.
‘GLOBALIZE THE INTIFADA’: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE PHRASE MAMDANI WON’T CONDEMN
Byron York, the Washington Examiner’s chief political correspondent, said Monday that Mamdani’s potential loss could show the “weaknesses” of the socialist movement in the Democratic Party. However, he also said Mamdani will likely win if Cuomo, Adams, and Sliwa remain in the race.
Adams and Sliwa have rebuked the possibility of dropping out, with the former condemning Cuomo’s request to withdraw as the “highest level of arrogance.” Sliwa, meanwhile, said he would only withdraw if “they figure out a way to put me in a pine box and bury me six feet under.”
