Netanyahu grants Latin patriarch access to Holy Sepulchre

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu granted Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa full and immediate access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem after police blocked him and the Latin Patriarchate delegation from entering for Palm Sunday. Netanyahu said Iran has repeatedly targeted the holy sites in jerusalem and, to protect worshippers, authorities had asked people of all faiths to avoid large gatherings; nonetheless, he instructed that Pizzaballa be allowed to hold services as he wishes. Earlier, Pizzaballa and Rev. Francesco Ielpo were turned back en route to the church, and Netanyahu noted that one strike had occurred within meters of the church. The move drew international attention and criticism from leaders such as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who called the restriction unacceptable or an overreach. U.S. figures, including Mike huckabee as ambassador to Israel, described the police action as an overreach, while others highlighted safety concerns and the broader context of Jerusalem’s fragile security situation.

“To protect worshippers, Israel asked members of all faiths to temporarily abstain from worshipping at the Christian, Muslim and Jewish holy sites in Jerusalem’s Old City,” Netanyahu said on Sunday. “Today, out of special concern for his safety, Cardinal Pizzaballa was asked to refrain from holding mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.”

Netanyahu added that while he understood the safety concerns, he instructed authorities to allow Pizzaballa to hold services “as he wishes” after initially being told to turn back.

The latter leader, an ally of President Donald Trump, called it “unacceptable” for Christians and said war cannot “exclude followers of any religion from our shared holy city, Jerusalem.”
