Nashville shooting: Covenant School footage released by police as hero officers named

Two police officers, named Rex Englebert and Michael Collazo, are being hailed as heroes for fatally shooting Audrey Hale, the perpetrator of the Covenant School shooting in Nashville, Tennessee. Hale had opened fire on students and faculty at the Christian school, leading to the death of three children and three adults.

Englebert, a four-year veteran of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, and Collazo, a nine-year veteran, were identified as the two officers who killed Hale on Monday, a day after the attack. According to police, a group of officers had rushed to the school to respond to the situation and evacuate the building. Upon their arrival, they encountered Hale in a common area on the second floor of the building, and the two officers began firing, leading to Hale’s death.

In addition to the officers’ identification, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department released surveillance footage of Hale entering the school and then walking through hallways, brandishing two assault-type guns, a 9 mm pistol, and wearing a tactical vest along with a white shirt, camouflage pants, and a backward red hat.

The police have found maps of the Covenant School, which included entry points along with a manifesto relating to the shooting in Hale’s home. While they have not revealed a clear motive, they do have a working theory, which they have chosen not to release at this time. They have also stated that the shooter had another target but did not opt to go to the second location due to security reasons.

Hale was 28 years old, lived in the Nashville area, and was transgender, identifying as a man although being a biological woman.
