A Shocking Turn of Events

A Minnesota Democratic Party official who⁣ once advocated for the dismantling of the Minneapolis Police Department is now singing a different tune after becoming a victim of a violent carjacking.

A Terrifying Ordeal

Shivanthi Sathanandan,⁤ the second vice chairwoman of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, resides in Minneapolis. In a heartfelt Facebook post ⁢on Wednesday, she revealed that she⁢ was violently carjacked by four young men who not only stole her vehicle⁢ but also subjected her to a brutal beating. The attack left her with a broken leg, deep lacerations on her head, and numerous cuts and bruises⁢ all over her body.

“I’m now ⁤part of the statistics,” Sathanandan wrote. “We ‌need to get illegal guns off of our streets, catch these young people who are running wild creating chaos across our city, and HOLD THEM IN CUSTODY AND PROSECUTE THEM.”

Despite her harrowing experience, Sathanandan expressed ‌her gratitude towards the “incredible”⁢ Minneapolis police officers who swiftly responded to the incident, as well as Police Chief Brian O’Hara.

A Change of Heart

Interestingly, Sathanandan’s current tough-on-crime stance ⁢and praise for the police stand in stark contrast ⁢to her‍ previous positions during the 2020 George Floyd riots.

On June‌ 5, 2020, she⁤ demanded the dismantling of the Minneapolis Police Department, claiming that it had failed both the Black community and society⁣ as a whole.

Minneapolis did make an attempt to‌ defund its police department⁣ in response to such demands. In December‍ 2020, the city council slashed nearly‍ $8 million from the police budget as crime rates soared.

However, the defunding effort was ultimately rejected by voters in the⁤ 2021 ballot, who opted to maintain the police force rather than replace it with a “Department of Public Safety.”

A City in Crisis

Despite these⁤ developments, Minneapolis continues to grapple with a surge in crime. According to police data, the ⁢city is experiencing an alarming increase in assaults, sex offenses, and motor vehicle thefts. Homicides and burglaries are also on the rise, nearing the numbers ‌from the previous year.

A ⁣Plea for Justice

In her recent post, Sathanandan implored Minnesotans to remember her ordeal when considering the release of juveniles and young offenders from custody. She emphasized that these criminals must ⁣not be allowed to prevail, and that it is crucial to reclaim the safety of⁢ their city.
