Mike Johnson’s chief of staff to leave the speaker’s office
Speaker mike johnson’s (R-LA) chief of staff, Hayden Haynes, is expected to leave his staff next month after roughly a decade with johnson, including the entire period since Johnson became Speaker in 2017. Haynes previously served as Johnson’s campaign manager and later as chief of staff, and his background includes work for former Louisiana Sen. David Vitter. He will be replaced by Garrett Fultz,Johnson’s deputy chief of staff.

A source familiar with the matter confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Hayden Haynes will depart Johnson’s staff next month. Haynes has been with Johnson for his entire speakership thus far, while House GOP leadership navigated the slimmest margin in House history.

According to Legistorm, Hayes started as Johnson’s campaign manager in 2016, where he later became his chief of staff in 2017. Johnson took office on Jan. 3, 2017, and went on to become speaker after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted in 2023.

Haynes went to Louisiana Tech University and previously worked for former Louisiana GOP Sen. David Vitter, where he began as an intern and rose to regional representative before going to work for Johnson.
Haynes will be replaced by Johnson’s deputy chief of staff, Garrett Fultz.
