Migrants Refuse to Stay at New NYC Shelter, Demand New Accommodations

They had dreams of⁤ living in America, but not in an emergency shelter at Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field.

A tent city was set up at the former airfield to house ⁤approximately 2,000 undocumented immigrants‍ who had arrived in the city. However, when a bus arrived on Sunday afternoon, ‍several of the immigrants expressed their dissatisfaction, according to⁣ the New York Post.

“We weren’t informed about our destination. I work and my kids ⁣go to school in the Bronx. ‌It’s ridiculous for us to live out here. We’re going back,”⁣ one migrant told the Post.

Assembly member Jaime Williams, who represents the⁤ district including Bennett Field, was present at the site and acknowledged the families’ outrage, as reported⁢ by the New⁤ York Daily⁤ News.

“Families ⁣arrived and saw the accommodations. ‌When ‍they realized they wouldn’t be staying at a hotel, they refused to stay and demanded to‌ be taken somewhere else. They⁤ were not informed in advance that they would be going to a tent city,” Williams said.

Williams addressed the ⁤illegal immigrants, stating, “No woman or children should be bused around like ‍this. Let them know that this is not ‍the place for you guys to be — in an isolated area.”

According to the Post, she described the site as “a disaster waiting to happen.”

“It’s not the ideal location for anyone ⁢to live. There’s no supermarket. There’s no infrastructure,” Williams stated.

WABC-TV reported⁤ that Williams said, “Having your child in the southern end of Brooklyn here, when there is nothing,⁣ transit desert, is just not compatible.”

Legal Aid Society ⁣Staff Attorney Stephanie Randolph compared the site to a⁢ prison.

“If the city is not⁢ offering any alternatives, it’s either leave New York City or go to Floyd Bennett Field,” Randolph‌ said.

Public Advocate Jumaane⁢ Williams called⁤ for the illegal immigrants to be housed elsewhere in the state.

“We really need ‌the governor to realize that the‍ right to‍ shelter ⁢is statewide and open up some spaces across the state. And we need the White House ‍to ⁢help with a decompression⁤ strategy. When ⁤those things are not‍ happening, you’re asking New ‍York City to provide a national ⁢response, and we just don’t have the ability to do that,” Williams explained.

Kayla Mamelak, a representative of Mayor ⁢Eric Adams, stated that options are running out as the number of illegal immigrants continues‍ to rise.

“With over 65,600 migrants currently in our care, and thousands more arriving every week, we have⁣ utilized every⁣ available space in New York City and simply do not have good options left to shelter migrants,” Mamelak said.

Increases. She emphasized the need for federal support to address the growing crisis.

“New York City ‌is facing an unprecedented ⁣influx of undocumented immigrants,⁣ and we simply‌ cannot handle the situation alone,” Mamelak said. “We need the federal government to step up and provide the necessary⁤ resources and support to address this ‍crisis⁢ effectively.”

The demands and frustrations expressed by the⁢ migrants at Floyd ‍Bennett Field highlight the challenges faced by both the immigrants ⁢and the authorities tasked with providing suitable accommodations. The lack of transparency and communication regarding the⁤ living conditions at the site only exacerbates the already difficult situation.

It is crucial ⁣for government agencies to prioritize the well-being and dignity of these individuals. Access⁤ to facilities⁤ such as ⁢supermarkets, educational institutions, and transportation is essential for them to⁣ integrate into their new environment and thrive.
