With 10 Senate seats up for reelection in November, Republicans have a good chance at winning at least six states, making this the GOP’s most favorable Election Day map in a decade.

However, after the GOP failed to win majority control in 2020 and in 2022 despite favorable conditions, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is narrowing his party’s focus to picking up seats in four states.

“You take polls around Labor Day and begin to decide where you’re going to play,” McConnell said in an interview with Politico. “But we know where we’re going to play for sure right now: Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland.”

This narrow strategy comes after former Senate GOP campaign chief Rick Scott (R-FL) wrongly predicted the GOP would have a pathway to win 55 seats in the midterm elections, which many blame on former President Donald Trump’s endorsement of divisive primary candidates. Now, however, the hope is that Trump’s performance in swing states could win over more voters.

“It’s important to not get too excited, because it’s noteworthy that in the last cycle, not a single incumbent lost,” McConnell said in an interview with Politico. “So what’s the message? Candidate quality. It’s important to continue to say you want 51. There’s nothing wrong with getting more, but 51 gives you control. And I think that’s going to be really important, no matter who’s elected president.”

Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Bob Casey (D-PA) are all in vulnerable positions as all three of them are facing wealthy conservative outsiders. However, none of the challengers have held elected office. Dave McCormick, who served as CEO of Bridgewater Associates, has closed more than half of the lead held by Casey. McCormick is now just 4 percentage points behind Casey, according to the Emerson College poll released on Tuesday. In the Montana Senate race, polling from April shows Tester’s challenger Tim Sheehy leading 48% to 45%, and a poll from March shows GOP nominee Bernie Moreno trailing behind Brown by 4 percentage points.

While the GOP hasn’t won a Senate race in Maryland since 1980, the retirement of Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) leaves Republicans hopeful of picking up the seat with two-term former Gov. Larry Hogan as their top contender against Democratic Senate candidate Angela D. Alsobrooks.
