Maryland Democrat proposes law barring everyone under 25 from felony murder charges

A Democratic Delegate proposed a law Maryland Anyone under 25 years old would be prohibited from being charged in felony murder.

Charlotte Crutchfield, a Democrat delegate, presented the proposal through House Bill 1180, local news outlet WBFF reported. Maryland can charge a defendant with felony murder if they are convicted of murdering someone during a felony offense, such as robbery.

Crutchfield and the bill’s supporters argue that the brain does not develop fully before the age of 25, so the harsh sentence is unjust.

“We don’t allow children under 18 to do a myriad of other things under the law,” Jill Carter from the state, who sponsored the companion bill, spoke to the outlet.

The bill was instantly decried by Republicans Law enforcement officials and the public, who claimed that it would lead to an increase in crime.
