Louisiana Democrat Cleo Fields abandons reelection bid

“I feel my calling to serve the people is better put to use back home than here in D.C., and I intend to answer that call,” Fields said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.
The map, newly adopted in May, dismantled Fields’s district and created a congressional plan that is expected to favor Republicans, while leaving Rep. Troy Carter’s (D-LA) 2nd Congressional District as the state’s lone majority-black seat.

Fields, who has served six years in the House across two nonconsecutive terms, condemned the court’s April ruling as “a grave setback to voting rights.”

“Minority candidates are rarely, if ever, elected from districts where they are not the majority, underscoring why fair districting remains essential to ensuring equal representation,” he said.
The ruling has already reshaped Louisiana’s 2026 election calendar. Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) suspended the state’s scheduled May 16 congressional primaries to give lawmakers time to redraw district lines. The legislature later rescheduled the elections for Nov. 3 and returned Louisiana to its “jungle primary” system, in which all candidates appear on a single ballot, with runoffs, if necessary, set for Dec. 12.
