Louisville shooting: Police release bodycam footage of response to attack

Recently, the police released the bodycam footage from their response to the mass shooting that happened in Louisville, Kentucky. Deputy Police Chief Paul Humphrey added commentary for the video.

Previously news stated that the shooter, Connor Sturgeon, ambushed officers from a vantage point at the bank. He situated himself in a place where he could easily see the officers, but they could not see him. Humphrey said that Sturgeon waited for the officers to respond after shooting and injuring two people in the bank. He shot and wounded two officers, one of whom was critically injured. Moments later, the police arrived on the scene and, after a few minutes, managed to engage and kill Sturgeon, ending the deadly attack.

Three videos were shown at the conference held by the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department. The videos included the body camera footage of Nickolas Wilt, who was critically wounded by fire from the suspect, and the body camera footage of Cory Galloway, who shot and killed Sturgeon. The third footage was taken by bystanders. The footage did not show any video of the active shooting, but only showed the police response after they arrived on the scene. The position of Galloway’s body camera did not capture a clear view of Sturgeon’s death, and his body was blurred due to the graphic nature of the scene. There was no video footage of the other victims, and their bodies were not shown either.

During the conference, Humphrey heaped heavy praise on Wilt and Galloway, describing their response as “exactly the response we needed.” He said the officers did exactly what they needed to do to save lives. Once officers arrived at the spot, not another person was shot, and not another person received any further injury. Humphrey also added that no footage taken during the active shooting was released due to some reasons.

The bodycam footage showed the tension and stress that officers were going through during the shooting. Humphrey stated that he would love to have either one of those officers ride with him any day.
