Los Angeles City Council Celebrates 100th Anniversary of the Hollywood Sign
The Los Angeles City Council gathered on October 31 to honor the iconic Hollywood Sign, which was celebrating its 100th year anniversary. In recognition of this milestone, the council declared October 31 as “Hollywood Sign Day” in the city.
Councilwoman Nithya Raman, representing the 4th District that includes Mount Lee where the Hollywood Sign is located, led a presentation during the council meeting. She highlighted the efforts of the Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the maintenance, repair, and preservation of the famous sign.
Originally designated as a historic cultural monument in 1973, the council passed a resolution introduced by Ms. Raman on October 10 to honor the sign’s centennial anniversary.

“The Hollywood Sign brings so many people here and generates significant revenue for the city. As we enter the next century, we must allocate some of those funds to maintain the surrounding park and ensure that this iconic sign remains a valuable resource for visitors without causing inconvenience to the residents,” expressed Ms. Raman.
Jeff Zarrinnam, chairman of the Hollywood Sign Trust’s Board of Trustees, shared his childhood promise to take care of the Hollywood Sign. He expressed gratitude to his colleagues, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Hollywood United Neighborhood Council, and others involved in the preservation of the beloved sign.
Adam Burke, president and CEO of Los Angeles Tourism, emphasized the Hollywood Sign’s role in the city’s tourism recovery following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted that tourism is the fourth largest employment sector in Los Angeles, providing jobs for approximately 550,000 people. Visitors contributed around $34.5 billion to the local business community last year.
“No matter where I go in the world, people are drawn to our city of angels because it represents personal freedom and celebrates diversity and inclusion,” stated Mr. Burke.
According to Ms. Raman, the Hollywood Sign originated as a billboard concept for a real estate development called Hollywood Land in 1923. On December 8 of that year, the sign was illuminated by 3,700 light bulbs for the first time, capturing the attention of Angelenos.
In 1994, the developers of Hollywood Land donated the remaining undeveloped land, spanning 425 acres, to the city of Los Angeles. The city formally accepted the offer and incorporated it into its park acreage on January 30, 1945.
In 1978, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce launched a “Save the Sign” campaign to raise funds for a new, more permanent Hollywood Sign. The campaign successfully collected $250,000, and the sign was rebuilt in October 1978 after years of neglect and repair.
The Hollywood Sign Trust was also recognized with a 2023 Preservation Award by the Los Angeles Conservancy.
