Kia recalls 462,000 Tellurides as NHTSA warns seats may catch on fire
Kia America has issued an urgent recall for over 400,000 Kia Tellurides due to a risk of fire caused by a malfunction in the vehicle’s power seat motor. The recall affects models from 2020 to 2024 and is a follow-up to a previous recall earlier in 2024 for the same issue. The problem stems from the slide cover or knob of the seat’s power mechanism potentially becoming dislodged if hit accidentally, leading to overheating and melting of the seat motor. As a safety measure, affected vehicles must be parked outside away from structures until repairs are completed. So far, seven seats have caught fire and eleven motors have melted. Kia will notify owners starting August 13 to schedule repairs, and vehicle data is available on NHTSA.gov starting July 17.
Kia America announced an urgent “park outside” recall for more than 400,000 Kia Tellurides, citing an issue with the car’s power seat motor that may cause it to overheat and potentially start a fire.
The vehicles “must be parked outside away from buildings and other vehicles until the new remedy is completed,” according to a press release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Thursday.
