Kemp refuses special session to oust Fulton County DA for alleged election meddling.
Gov. Brian Kemp: No Special Session to Impeach Fulton County District Attorney
Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) made a bold statement on Thursday, declaring that there will be no special session of the Georgia State legislature to impeach Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. In a surprising twist, Kemp argued that such an attempt could potentially be unconstitutional.
Kemp, despite his personal opinions on Willis’s investigation into former President Donald Trump and his allies, acknowledged that he lacks the authority to call for a special session. During a news conference, he emphasized the importance of following the law and the Constitution, regardless of political implications.
“We have a law in the state of Georgia that clearly outlines the legal steps that can be taken if constituents believe their local prosecutors are violating their oath by engaging in unethical or illegal behavior,” Kemp stated.
The governor further stated that he has not seen any evidence that would warrant action by the prosecuting attorneys oversight commission. Calling for a special session to impeach Willis was deemed “unfeasible” and potentially even “unconstitutional.”
Kemp’s resolute stance effectively puts the matter of impeaching Willis to rest, following her indictment of Trump and his allies earlier this month. Notably, a total of 19 individuals have been arrested on RICO charges.
The House Judiciary Committee has also launched its own investigation into Willis, with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) expressing concerns about potential political motivations behind her actions. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has shown her support for Trump and announced the congressional investigation while standing outside the Fulton County Jail.
