Raskin: Senate decision by July 4, 2024.

Rep. Jamie Raskin Considering Run for Maryland Senate Seat

“I’m hoping before the Fourth of July, I will have an answer for everybody. The election is not until May 24, 2024 — the primary, and then the election is a year and a half away,” Raskin said.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is seriously considering running for Maryland’s open Senate seat, currently held by retiring Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD). Raskin hopes to make a decision before July 4th, as he weighs the pros and cons of pursuing a Senate seat instead of running for reelection to his House seat.

Why Raskin is Considering the Senate Seat

Raskin is interested in the constitutional functions that the Senate has, such as advice and consent, Supreme Court nominations, and judicial confirmations. He believes that these are important areas that he could make a difference in, and that’s why he’s seriously considering the Senate seat.

When asked about concerns surrounding the age of another Democrat on the 2024 ballot, President Joe Biden, Raskin defended Biden, saying he should be judged on his record rather than his age. Raskin believes that Biden has grown wise in his many decades in public office and should be judged by the results of his administration.

What’s Next for Raskin?

Raskin has not yet made a decision on whether he will pursue the Senate seat or run for reelection to his House seat. He loves the House of Representatives and the people he serves with, but he’s also interested in the unique opportunities that the Senate provides. He hopes to have an answer for everyone before July 4th.
