Rep. Jamie Raskin may run for Senate in 2024.

Rep. Jamie Raskin “seriously considering” running for retiring Sen. Ben Cardin’s Senate seat

“I’ve not decided…I love the House of Representatives, I love the people I serve with, and I love being in the people’s house.”

– Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.)

Cardin’s announcement that he would not be seeking reelection to his Senate seat has sparked speculation about who will run for the position. One of Maryland’s most prominent Democrats, Rep. Jamie Raskin, has yet to make a decision but says he is “seriously considering it.”

While Raskin loves serving in the House of Representatives, he acknowledges that Senate seats don’t open up often and that the Senate has certain constitutional functions that he is interested in, such as advise and consent, Supreme Court nominations, and judicial confirmations.

On the other side of the aisle, GOP hopes have been rekindled to recruit Gov. Larry Hogan, a successful Republican in a state that hasn’t elected a Republican president since 1988, to run for the Republican ticket. However, Hogan has repeatedly declined these efforts, leaving the Senate seat up for grabs.

Raskin’s decision

Raskin, who is currently recovering from lymphoma, hopes to make a decision about running for the Senate seat by July. Until then, he will continue to serve the people of Maryland in the House of Representatives.

Why this matters

  • The race for Cardin’s Senate seat will be closely watched as Democrats try to maintain their slim majority in the Senate.
  • Raskin’s decision could have a significant impact on the outcome of the race.
  • If Raskin decides to run, he will likely face competition from other prominent Democrats in Maryland.
