Israel questions why UN and international agencies have not condemned Hamas use of hospitals
Israeli Leaders Call for International Condemnation of Hamas’s Use of Hospitals
Israeli leaders are urging the international community to take a stand against Hamas’s exploitation of hospitals, accusing them of remaining silent on the matter. They claim that Hamas has turned the Shifa Hospital in Gaza into a central command post, using it as a base for their activities. Israeli officials have presented evidence, including the discovery of weapons and a tunnel shaft, which may be connected to Hamas’s extensive tunnel network. In a recent video released by the Israel Defense Forces, Hamas fighters can be seen escorting suspected hostages through the hospital.

“We demand that global agencies be held accountable for their silence regarding Hamas’s use of hospitals as human shields,” emphasized Eylon Levy, a spokesperson for the Israeli government, during an interview with BBC Radio.
This criticism echoes the sentiments expressed by many Israeli officials who believe that the United Nations and other international organizations have failed to condemn Hamas adequately. They argue that these organizations have also overlooked the terrorist attacks on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,400 civilians and the kidnapping of around 240 individuals, with only five having been released so far. The well-being of the remaining hostages remains unknown.
Last week, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution calling for humanitarian pauses in Israel’s conflict with Hamas and the immediate release of all hostages. However, it does not explicitly condemn Hamas’s attack on October 7.
“The Security Council’s resolution is detached from reality and holds no meaning,” stated Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan. “Regardless of the Council’s decision, Israel will continue to act in accordance with international law, while Hamas terrorists will not even acknowledge the resolution, let alone abide by it. It is regrettable that the Council continues to ignore, fail to condemn, or even acknowledge the massacre carried out by Hamas on October 7, which triggered the war in Gaza. It is truly disgraceful! Hamas’s strategy is to deliberately worsen the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and increase Palestinian casualties, hoping to pressure the U.N. and the Security Council to intervene and halt Israel’s actions. But that will not happen. Israel will persist until Hamas is eradicated, and the hostages are safely returned.”
Israeli President Isaac Herzog echoed these sentiments during an interview on Fox News, describing the U.N. as a “hypocritical organization” that consistently employs anti-Semitic language and routinely passes resolutions against Israel.
Some members of Congress also share the view that international leaders are not sufficiently critical of Hamas and its endangerment of civilian lives. Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) accused World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of promoting a “disinformation campaign” that benefits Hamas during a recent House Foreign Affairs subcommittee hearing on anti-Israel bias at the U.N.
“Since October 7, the WHO and its director have primarily targeted Israel in their statements, either explicitly or implicitly,” stated Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of U.N. Watch, during the same hearing. “Hamas is rarely mentioned. The same can be said for numerous other U.N. humanitarian agencies, including OCHA, WFP, UNDP, UNHCR, and, of course, UNRWA.”

How does the Israeli government urge the international community to hold Hamas accountable for their exploitation of hospitals and other civilian infrastructure
From the reality on the ground in Gaza,” stated Levy. “It fails to acknowledge Hamas’s blatant disregard for civilian lives and their strategy of using hospitals as a shield. This resolution does not do justice to the innocent victims and hostages who are trapped amidst this violence.”
The Israeli government has called on the global community to take a firm stance against Hamas’s use of hospitals for military activities. They argue that this not only violates international law but also puts innocent civilians at risk, as hospitals are meant to be safe havens for the sick and injured. By turning hospitals into military installations, Hamas is jeopardizing the lives of patients, medical staff, and anyone seeking medical assistance in Gaza.
In addition to the security concerns, Israeli leaders emphasize the moral implications of Hamas’s actions. They question how an organization that claims to champion the Palestinian cause can justify using hospitals and other civilian infrastructure for military purposes. By doing so, Hamas not only endangers innocent lives but also undermines the legitimacy of their own cause.
The Israeli government points out that the exploitation of hospitals by Hamas is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of using civilian infrastructure for military purposes. They cite numerous instances of Hamas using schools, mosques, and residential areas to launch rockets, store weapons, and hide militants. These actions clearly meet the criteria for war crimes under international law.
Israeli officials argue that the international community must condemn Hamas’s actions unequivocally and hold them accountable for their crimes. They urge global organizations, such as the United Nations, to investigate these violations thoroughly and take appropriate action. The failure to do so, they claim, only perpetuates the cycle of violence and further endangers innocent civilians in Gaza.
As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, it is imperative that the international community does not remain silent on the issue of Hamas’s exploitation of hospitals. By calling for concrete condemnation and action, Israeli leaders hope to draw attention to the grave violations of international law committed by Hamas and ensure that hospitals can once again serve their intended purpose of providing medical care to those in need. The lives of innocent civilians in Gaza must not be overlooked, and the international community must stand united against the use of hospitals as military installations.
