Iran to charge fees for Strait of Hormuz transit amid ceasefire

Iran announced it would guarantee safe passage for ships through the Strait of Hormuz during a two-week ceasefire with the United States and Israel, coordinating with Iran’s armed forces and potentially charging transit fees to fund reconstruction, according to a statement by Foreign Minister Abbas araghchi on behalf of the Supreme National Security Council. The announcement came as president Donald Trump said the U.S. had agreed to the two-week cessation of hostilities, and a regional official suggested Iran and oman would also levy transit fees. Araghchi cautioned that the two-week window would operate with “technical limitations” and did not specify how coordination with transit vessels would work. The ceasefire was described as extending to Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, with long-term peace talks planned in pakistan. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the agreement and invited delegations to Islamabad for further negotiations. Trump claimed Iran provided a 10-point peace plan and suggested oil prices would fall amid the ceasefire.

Iran to charge fees and coordinate safe passage through Strait of Hormuz amid ceasefire

Iran said Tuesday it would guarantee the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz with Iranian military coordination as part of its two-week ceasefire with the United States and Israel.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the announcement in a statement on behalf of the Supreme National Security Council minutes after President Donald Trump said the U.S. agreed to the two-week cessation of hostilities. A regional official said Iran and Oman would also charge vessels for transit, with Iran to use this money for reconstruction.

“If attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations,” Araghchi said. “For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations.”

Araghchi’s statement did not immediately make clear what the council meant by “technical limitations” or how Iran’s armed forces would coordinate with transiting vessels.

With the agreement coming before Trump’s 8 p.m. deadline for a peace deal, Trump did not follow through on his Tuesday morning threat that Iran’s “whole civilization will die tonight” if the regime did not strike a deal. Instead, Trump celebrated the ceasefire agreement on Truth Social.

“Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!” Trump wrote.

Trump announced that the U.S. received a 10-point plan for a long-term peace from Iran, saying the White House believes “it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”

“Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated,” Trump wrote.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has been an intermediary of the peace negotiations, announced Thursday evening that “the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon and elsewhere, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.”

The ceasefire also extends to Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Sharif said, noting that long-term peace discussions will be held in Pakistan on Friday.

“I warmly welcome the sagacious gesture and extend deepest gratitude to the leadership of both the countries and invite their delegations to Islamabad on Friday, 10th April 2026, to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes,” Sharif said.
