Illegal Immigrant Crossings Are Spiking … At The Northern Border

As they try to deal with illegal immigrants entering the U.S. from Canada, local authorities and state governments are requesting more assistance from the federal government. 

Around 2,000 Mexican migrants crossed illegally the Swanton Sector border between Canada and New York. It spans 24,000 miles and is located between New York, New Hampshire and Vermont. This stretch is approximately 24,000 square miles. NBC News reported that authorities only recorded 200 such crossings in the same time frame as the previous year. reportedThe spike is alarming Americans living near the northern border. 

“People are scared,” A Champlain County resident in New York said. “It’s the fear of the unknown. They’re [neighbors] worried about their safety, because they don’t know these people.”

Another New York resident said that illegal immigrants were present at her house, prompting her to install security cameras. 

“It’s not something I would usually do,” She spoke. “But it makes me think twice. And with the kids and the family, I gotta install cameras.”

Canada’s changing laws have led to a policy In 2016, Mexican migrants are allowed to fly to the country with no visas. In the belief that it will be easier to enter America illegally, the migrants attempt to cross illegally from the north rather than trying to walk across to the southern border of the United States. According to NBC, there are only 2,000 Border Patrol Agents at the northern border for a 5,000 mile stretch. There are 16,000 Border Patrol Agents at the U.S.-Mexico frontier for 2,000 miles. 

However, crossing the northern border can be dangerous, especially during winter. Fox News reported that the Swanton Sector’s border is heavily wooded with limited access to emergency service. reported. A Mexican immigrant was killed while trying to cross into Vermont from Canada last month. 

Republican New Hampshire governor. Chris Sununu addressed a letter to Alejandro Mayorkas from Homeland Security asking for more federal agents to assist his state at its border with Canada. He also requested that the Secretary grant permission for the state to take further action to stop illegal crossings. 

“The Biden Administration has cut funding and hindered the state’s ability to assist in patrolling the northern border,” Sununu wrote. “If the Biden Administration truly believes that securing the border is a priority, I hope you will partner with the State of New Hampshire to make this a reality.”

DHS had 25 Border Patrol agents sent to the northern border earlier this month in an effort to reduce illegal crossings.
