‘I Don’t Know’: Dem Lawmaker Had No Recollection of Drunk Driving Crash, Video Shows
A newly released body camera video shows that a Democratic lawmaker in Connecticut, Robin Comey, has no recollection of a drunk driving crash that took place blocks from the state capitol building. Hartford police had arrested Comey in March after she drunkenly flipped her car along a busy stretch of road near the Connecticut State Capitol. The bodycam footage shows that she failed to identify her whereabouts prior to the crash and could not explain what happened.
When asked about the incident by the police, Comey said “I don’t know”. She also did not know which restaurant she visited before the crash and said that she failed to eat anything. Police later revealed that she was drinking at a nearby tavern with three of her Democratic colleagues before attempting to drive home at nearly twice the legal blood alcohol limit.
Since the release of the compromising footage, increased pressure is on Comey to resign, but top Connecticut Democrats have stood by her so far. Comey plans to return to her legislative duties after finishing alcohol treatment.
However, this is not the first time Comey has faced scrutiny from an alcohol-related incident. Two years ago, she slurred her words during a House floor speech, prompting ridicule from late night host Jimmy Kimmel. Comey later said the drunken speech was caused by several factors, including anxiety, exhaustion, and the wine she had with dinner.
Despite Comey’s apology, the Democrat is set to face a court hearing in early May over the crash.

Some of Comey’s constituents have called on the Democrat to step down. One of them said, “For a representative to be getting a DUI like that and representing our state, I don’t think it’s right.” Another person said, “Just from the standpoint of you’re trying to set an example for younger people, whatever the case may be.”
