Hunter Biden plea: What does ‘ongoing investigation’ imply post plea deal?

Confusion Surrounds Ongoing Investigation into Hunter Biden

There is a cloud of confusion surrounding the recent announcement by U.S. Attorney David Weiss regarding the investigation into Hunter Biden. Despite Biden’s agreement to plead guilty to three federal charges, Weiss stated that the investigation is still ongoing.

The Department of Justice revealed that Biden will plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax crimes and one felony gun possession crime. However, Weiss, who is overseeing the case, made it clear that there is more to uncover.

House Republicans Seek Clarity

House Republicans, led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), are now seeking answers about the ongoing investigation. They are particularly interested in understanding the Department of Justice’s intentions.

Comer expressed his confusion, stating, “The last line from the U.S. Attorney from Delaware’s statement was that this is an ongoing investigation. I don’t know exactly what that means; we’re trying to determine that.”

Comer and House Oversight Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) recently reviewed two additional FBI-generated FD-1023 documents related to the alleged bribery scandal. Although heavily redacted, these documents mentioned Hunter Biden and Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company where Biden served on the board.

Requesting More Information

The committee plans to request further information from the DOJ and FBI regarding this investigation. However, Comer expressed concern that the DOJ might be using the ongoing investigation as an excuse to withhold crucial documents from the committee.

“I’m concerned, but I’ll give the US Attorney the benefit of the doubt, and hopefully, he’ll be able to answer that question,” Comer said. “I think everyone in America wants to know.”

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) shares Comer’s concerns and believes that the DOJ is using the ongoing investigation as a means to withhold information from the House Oversight Committee.

DOJ Remains Silent

When asked about the investigation and potential charges, a spokesperson for the DOJ declined to provide any specifics. This silence only adds to the confusion surrounding the case.

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) expressed his hope that there will be more serious charges brought against Hunter Biden. He believes that the FD-1023 and the ongoing investigation hold the key to uncovering the truth.

Comer plans to discuss the possibility of having Weiss testify before one of their committees with House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH).
