David Weiss collaborated with Beau Biden during his tenure as state attorney general in the Hunter Biden investigation.
Connections Between United States Attorney David Weiss and Beau Biden
United States Attorney David Weiss and the late Beau Biden had a professional relationship while Biden served as Delaware’s Attorney General. Their connection is now under scrutiny as the special counsel investigates Hunter Biden and allegations of lenient treatment.
Collaboration on Legal Cases
A recent report by The Washington Post reveals that Beau Biden, during his tenure as Delaware Attorney General, frequently communicated with Weiss, who was acting U.S. attorney in Delaware at the time.
“We are always working hand-in-glove with the federal government; there’s nothing unusual about that,” said Tim Mullaney Sr., Beau Biden’s chief of staff at the state attorney general’s office.
Mullaney emphasized that their interaction was not uncommon, given Delaware’s close-knit community, and suggested that their relationship was strictly professional.
“Everybody knows everybody in Delaware, and it wasn’t unusual to see [Joe Biden] at the bookstore, the ice cream shop. It is normal,” Mullaney said.
Investigation into Campaign Contributions
Weiss also previously investigated illegal campaign contributions made to Joe Biden’s 2008 presidential campaign. Beau Biden recused himself from the investigation, which resulted in the sentencing of Delaware businessman Christopher Tigani in 2012.
In a pre-sentencing memo, Weiss described Tigani as the “embodiment of the ‘Delaware Way,’ a concept described uniformly by the defendant and others as a form of soft corruption, intersecting business, and political interests, which has existed in this State for years.”
Special Counsel Weiss and the Hunter Biden Investigation
Weiss, nominated as a U.S. attorney in 2017 by former President Donald Trump, is now at the center of a five-year investigation into Hunter Biden. Earlier this year, Hunter Biden reached a plea agreement, but it fell apart in court when a judge questioned the gun charge diversion agreement.
Last week, Hunter Biden’s attorneys asserted that their deal with federal prosecutors to resolve the gun charge remains “valid and binding,” despite previous indications of an impasse.
Dismissal of Tax Charges
A federal judge in Delaware recently dismissed two tax charges against Hunter Biden. However, there is a possibility of future charges being filed in another jurisdiction.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Hunter Biden’s legal team and the Department of Justice for comment.
