Comer seeks unedited emails revealing VP Biden’s aide coordinating with Hunter’s contacts in investigation.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Requests Unredacted Records and Emails from Joe Biden’s Time as Vice President
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has taken action by sending a letter to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). In the letter, Comer requests unredacted records and emails from Joe Biden’s tenure as vice president. These records and emails are expected to shed light on the communications between Biden’s team and one of his son’s business associates regarding the suppression of stories about Burisma.
Emails Reveal Collaboration to Suppress Stories
The National Archives recently released emails that provide insight into the collaboration between Joe Biden’s communications director, Kate Bedingfield, and Eric Schwerin, a former business associate of Hunter Biden. These emails show discussions about press inquiries related to Hunter Biden’s position on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company.
According to the emails, Schwerin, who served as managing director of the investment firm Rosemont Seneca Partners, would assist in finding ways to suppress stories about Hunter Biden’s role on the board. In one email, Schwerin urges Bedingfield to avoid bringing up past stories unrelated to the matter at hand.
Bedingfield responds, assuring Schwerin that she has spoken with the reporter and that the information will only be used if necessary.
In another email, Schwerin provides Bedingfield with a quote from a spokesperson for Hunter Biden to address inquiries about his role with Burisma. Bedingfield confirms that Vice President Biden has approved the quote and will provide it to reporters.
Request for Complete and Unredacted Documents
While some of the emails released by NARA are unredacted, others remain redacted. Due to this, Comer is requesting additional information and complete, unredacted versions of the documents. He specifically seeks communications between the Office of the Vice President and Hunter Biden or his business associates.
Comer emphasizes that Joe Biden did not maintain a strict separation between his family’s business dealings and his official government work. He believes there is evidence of collusion in the efforts to manipulate media stories about Burisma’s corruption while Biden publicly advocated for anti-corruption measures in Ukraine.
Comer’s letter also highlights the concerning timing of the email chain, which aligns with a phone call Hunter Biden made at the request of Burisma officials. This call occurred on the same day Schwerin provided the aforementioned quotes.
Expanding the Scope of Investigation
In addition to the requested documents, Comer is also seeking all communications involving other individuals connected to Hunter Biden, such as Devon Archer, Vuk Jeremic, John Robinson “Rob” Walker, and Jeffrey Cooper. The committee is also interested in documents and communications involving James Biden, as well as individuals like Michael Carpenter, Kathy Chung, Amos Hochstein, Colin Kahl, and Alexander Mackler.
Deadline for Compliance
NARA has been given until September 20 to comply with Comer’s request. Comer emphasizes the need for accountability and transparency, stating that the Oversight Committee will continue to pursue all evidence to serve the American people.
