House Republicans are demanding testimony from Federal Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters after she blocked Congress from speaking with former Trump official Peter Navarro.

On Monday, House Judiciary Committee member Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was denied a request to speak with Navarro by Peters on the grounds that he was “too notorious” to meet with a member of Congress. That, in addition to the failure to comply with requests for information in another case, prompted the committee to demand Peters testify in Congress.

“Your refusal to allow a Member of Congress to meet with Dr. Navarro — in addition to BOP’s efforts to prevent Mr. Galanis from speaking to Congress — raise serious questions about the politicization of BOP,” the letter from the group said.

The latter part refers to Jason Galanis, a former associate of President Joe Biden who claims he is being mistreated in prison due to his speaking out against the president.

Peters is being asked to testify in front of Congress on June 13.

Gaetz previously revealed Peters’s prevention of interviewing Navarro on the House floor earlier this week.

“I’ve been trying for five weeks to be able to interview Mr. Navarro,” Gaetz said. “And there are provisions that ought to allow this and I was informed directly by Director Peters, who runs the bureau, that that request would be denied. And the reason it’s being denied is because Peter Navarro is ‘too notorious’ to be interviewed by a member of Congress.”

“John Gotti was interviewed when he was in prison! The Qanon shaman was interviewed in prison! Director Peters herself brought NBC News through prisons to showcase the work of corrections that’s being done,” he added. “So I think there is something else afoot here.”
